Athena Reader vs Koodo Reader

Updated 2026-11-05

Koodo Reader is a popular open-source reader for desktop, mobile and the web, with a long list of formats and export targets. Athena is built around asking questions about your own library and syncing it with no setup. Here is how they compare, and when Koodo is the better fit.

The short answer

  • Choose Koodo Reader if you want open-source software, a native desktop app on Windows, macOS and Linux, comics, many export targets such as Notion and Obsidian, or sync through storage you already own — OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox, WebDAV and more.
  • Choose Athena if you want sync that works the moment you sign in and is included in the free tier, and question answering across one item, a shelf or your whole library with a citation on every answer.

Where Koodo Reader is the better choice

Koodo is open source under AGPL-3.0 and runs natively on Windows, macOS and Linux as well as on phones, the web and Docker. It reads comics, exports notes to more formats, and pushes them straight into tools like Notion, Obsidian and Readwise. Its sync goes through storage you choose, so your files stay in your own drive. Its interface is translated into more languages than Athena’s 17.

Where Athena is the better choice

With Athena you do not configure anything to sync: sign in on a second device and your library, progress, notes and highlights are there, and that is part of the free tier. Question answering is built in and can span one item, a shelf or your entire library, with every answer pointing back to the passage it relied on. Words you look up can go into a vocabulary list with spaced-repetition review.
