Dictionaries and lookups

Looking up a word is what breaks the rhythm when you read in another language. Athena puts the dictionary a long-press away, and it works offline.

Two kinds of dictionary

- Local dictionaries: download once, then look up entirely offline. The dictionary library offers several languages; download what you need and delete what you do not.

- AI dictionary: explains a word in the context of the current sentence. The same word means different things in different sentences, which a fixed dictionary cannot handle; the trade-off is that it needs a connection and consumes AI credits.

Getting started

1. Go to Settings → Dictionary library and download the dictionaries you need.

2. While reading, long-press a word — the definition appears right in the popup.

3. From the popup you can hear it pronounced, add it to your vocabulary list, or hand it to the AI for a contextual explanation.

Troubleshooting

The word is not found: check that the dictionary for that language is downloaded. Inflected forms (plurals, tenses) may need looking up in their base form.

No pronunciation: pronunciation uses the system speech engine. If it is silent, run Settings → Listening → Speech self-check.

Dictionaries take up space: delete the ones you no longer need from the dictionary library page; you can download them again at any time.

Limits and notes

Local definitions come from public dictionary data, and coverage and quality vary between dictionaries. When precision matters, compare two dictionaries or use the AI dictionary for the contextual meaning.
