Reading and progress

Open something and Athena remembers the rest: the page you reached, the chapter you were in, the font size you chose. Pick up on another device and it is all there.

Getting started

1. Tap a cover in your library to open it.

2. Swipe or tap the edges of the screen to turn pages.

3. Tap the middle of the screen for the toolbar: table of contents, appearance, search and Listen.

4. Long-press to select text, then highlight it, write a note, look it up, add it to your vocabulary list, or ask the AI to explain it.

Appearance

Font size, line spacing, margins, typeface and theme (light / dark / follow system) are all adjustable. The settings apply to everything you open and sync across devices. Dark theme saves power at night, noticeably so on OLED screens.

Reading progress

Progress is stored as an exact position inside the chapter, not a page percentage — switching devices or changing the font size will not shift your place. Progress is recorded while offline too and syncs when you reconnect.

Home, goals and reading stats

On a phone the app opens on Home: continue reading, today's time, your streak, this week's activity, and vocabulary due today. Daily and yearly goals can be changed on those cards.

A computer has no separate home screen — you land in the library. Reading stats in the sidebar gathers goals, streak, weekly activity and a yearly heatmap. The same stats are in your account on a phone.

Reading goal reminders

Turn the reminder on under Settings → Reading and pick a time. If you have not hit today's goal by then, you get one reminder. Devices that can take a system push receive it from the server in your timezone; others use a local notification. The channel is shown on the settings page, and you can send a test first.

Search in the dock or sidebar looks across library items, notes, highlights and vocabulary. Tap a result to jump to it. The library page itself has no search box — this is the place to look things up.

How PDFs differ

PDFs have a fixed layout, so font size and spacing cannot be reflowed — only zoomed. Scanned PDFs need text recognition (OCR) before you can search or copy; listening works on born-digital PDFs only, never on OCR output.

Troubleshooting

It will not open or keeps loading: first check that it is not still "processing". If you are offline, it must already be cached on this device; uncached files cannot be opened offline.

Progress jumped somewhere else: when two devices read the same item, the last synced position wins. Let both devices sync once and they will agree.

Page turns feel slow: very large files (especially image-heavy PDFs) need parsing on first open and are much faster afterwards.

Limits and notes

Read the same item on one device at a time — that avoids progress overwriting itself back and forth.

Deleted items go to "Recently deleted" and can be restored during the retention window, after which they are permanently removed.
